Apple Samosa
The past few days have been an absolute whirlwind for Maddy and I. The week started off with a long day at work followed by a well deserved vacation and the finale was wait for it, wait for it,, a working weekend (What a bummer!!!) There was no way I was going to let the week end on such a sour note. So for the perfect ending I came up with these caramelized APPLE SAMOSAS. The cherry on top was that these samosas were dipped in chocolate syrup and eaten with our favorite ice cream.
Ever since I joined my new job 9 months ago I haven’t taken any time off. Our wedding anniversary was coming up so I figured now was a perfect time for a vacation. There were a couple of issues though; firstly I was in the midst of a long project and secondly the anniversary was on a Wednesday. So we decided to take a mini vacation by taking 3 days off in the middle of the week. After asking around for nearby places we settled on “FREDERICKSBURG” a quiet little town in Texas Hill Country. Luckily for us it turned out to be a very good choice.
The highlight of our visit was “HAMILTON POOL” which is about 50 miles outside Fredericksburg. It is one of those amazing natural wonders which leaves you speechless. So I am just going to show Y’ALL.
This is a beautiful natural habitat and if y’all look closely behind us y’all can see that it is actually possible to go behind the waterfall and feel the water splashing over you. Isn’t that awesome???
Another highlight of the trip was the amazing German food we had in this quaint little town. The town is actually settled by german immigrants so I expected something authentic. What we got was something outside this world. Unfortunately the trip ended quickly and I was back to work rather soon. Saturday evening I wanted to indulge myself with something sweet but the only thing left in the fridge was the apples. With a blog name like samosa street I believe anything stuffed in a samosa tastes good; even apples. The end result were these decadent apple samosas.
This is a fairly simple recipe in which I have simply cooked the apples in cinnamon sugar and stuffed them in samosas.
Melt ghee in a non-stick pan on a medium heat. Add apples and cook till tender. Add sugar, cinnamon powder and mix. Cook till most of the liquid has evaporated off. This step is important or else the dough is going to get soggy. Remove from the heat and let it cool.
You can find a step by step tutorial on the dough making process right HERE.
Divide the dough into equal portions. Roll into a disc and cut at the center to make two halves and apply water on the edges. Shape the dough into cones and put a spoonful of apple mixture into the cone. Brush plain water around the top edge and seal shut. Heat oil in a frying pan. Once the oil is hot gently slide in the samosas. Now reduce the heat and fry till golden brown on all the sides. Once done drain on a paper towel.
I enjoyed the samosas two ways. Like a lot of people chocolate is a sinfully guilty pleasure of mine. So I dunked these deep-fried goody pockets in chocolate syrup before gobbling them up.
We just happened to have some ice cream lying in our freezer. So how can I not resist pairing the two together????

I made apple pear and cinnamon samosas and made up some real thick custard and allowed it to cool along with filling. I then put a small spoon of custard in the cone before the filling! The result: pure bliss! Amazing! Thank you x
Apple, pear and cinnamon go really well together but I must say the addition of the custard was an unexpectedly pleasant touch. I am going to give that one a try myself..

Thank you so much Shashi. Hamilton Pool was a crazy last-minute detour on our part which turned out to be the highlight of our trip. As for the samosa hut/cafe idea then you are going to get me in trouble at my day job by suggesting things like that.. 🙂
